An Introduction To Women In Finance

Women in Finance is a non-profit membership-based organization that was started in South Africa in November 2005 in response to a lack of financial literacy and access to finance of individuals and business owners. It has since broadened into an organisation offering various small business development services to both male and female owned organisations.

Their mission is

“To collaboratively develop individuals and business owners.”

Women in Finance promotes opportunities for men and women through networking, mentorship, training, collaboration, entrepreneurship development and support.

Women in Finance have been appointed by the Internatinal Labour Organisation as the custodians of the website www.mowea.net which has been funded by the ILO to capture all the events hosted in the countries in Africa celebrating their individual women’s month.

We are actively seeking partners for this website.

South Africa ’s rapidly evolving business community is seeing greater numbers of small businesses emerging than ever before. However, the reality is that most of these companies don’t make it past their first two years because their owners don’t have the practical skills or support needed to sustain and grow their businesses.

Unfortunately, enthusiasm is no substitute for entrepreneurial know-how and the reality is that not everyone is a natural entrepreneur and even experience in the corporate environment is no guarantee that one has the right skills to run a successful business. Clearly, there is a great need for entrepreneurs to learn these skills, but one of the major challenges small business owners face is taking time off work for training.

Women in Finance recognised the need for a short, powerful learning experience that would equip business owners with the practical skills they need to grow their companies, whilst giving them the opportunity to attract new business.

Showcase Your Business is ground-breaking in that it gives small business owners the opportunity to learn about how to improve the running of their companies while they demonstrate their businesses and pick up new potential leads.

Nothing sells quite like seeing a business in action. And that’s what Showcase Your Business is all about – empowering business owners with the skills they need to get ahead and then giving them the opportunity to prove themselves and make the kind of contacts that will take them to the next level in their businesses.

Trainers who’re successful business people in their own right will be sharing their knowledge and expertise in a highly interactive manner, using various practical examples and techniques, such as role-playing, to ensure delegates leave the event with more than knowledge; indeed, tools that will make a tangible difference to their businesses.

Topics include: How to sell, how to close deals, innovative ways of growing your business without getting into debt, negotiation skills, improving presentation skills, marketing, networking and winning tenders, to name but a few. Throughout the event, delegates will have the chance to put what they’ve learnt into practice in a comfortable environment, surrounded by other like-minded individuals.

The point is to do more than pass on knowledge. We want people to build up their confidence as they put their skills into practice, using the incredible opportunity presented by the event to form relationships with other business owners and generate useful leads for future business.

Delegates may choose to exhibit at Showcase Your Business, attend the conference as well as the networking events.
